Illinois boater education
Illinois currently requires a boater education card from all persons 12 to 17 years old who operate a powered boat or personal watercraft in Illinois. Persons younger than 12 may not operate boats in Illinois.
Additionally, many insurance agencies offer a boat insurance discount for older boaters who have taken a boating safety course.

Illinois does not currently require a boating license.
